The Royal Australian Navy Band in Sydney consists of approximately 50 full-time members under the musical direction of Lieutenant Matthew Klohs, and is complemented by a number of Naval Reserve Musicians as required.

The Sydney Band has a strong national and international focus and maintains versatile music capabilities, specialising in the delivery of ceremonial music, traditional and contemporary wind music, and popular music products.

In recent years members of the Sydney and Melbourne Bands have participated in a number of overseas deployments including to the Middle East, Turkey (Gallipoli), Timor Leste and the Solomon Islands; to locations all around the world aboard Royal Australian Navy ships; and to musical gatherings such as military tattoos in Brunei, the United Arab Emirates, China, Hong Kong and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland.

Members of the Band also frequently travel to naval establishments all around Australia supporting Navy ceremonies and events.

Key capabilities of the Band are its ceremonial ensemble (including its bugle, drum corps, and fanfare capabilities) and wind orchestra. Extending its reach is a high-energy show group - The Admiral's Own, and wind chamber ensembles - The Commodores. The Admiral's Own comprises jazz orchestra and big band capabilities, a rock group, and a small jazz ensemble. The Commodores consists of wind and brass combinations including quintets, quartets, trios and small vocal ensembles.

The Sydney Band maintains a very busy schedule performing at many public events throughout Sydney and New South Wales including school concerts, community music festivals, local commemorative services, charity events and large sporting events.

RAN Band Melbourne

Royal Australian Navy Band Melbourne is based at HMAS Cerberus, Westernport, Victoria. The Band consists of 33 full-time members under the musical direction of Lieutenant Andrew Stokes, and is complemented by a number of Naval Reserve Musicians as required.

RAN Band Melbourne provides musical support for Navy ceremonies, events and deployments, and is a highly professional public relations asset to the Royal Australian Navy.

All members of the Band perform in the Parade Band and Concert Band with the majority also performing in a variety of smaller ensembles including Big Band, Jazz Group, Rock Band and Brass or Wind Quintets.

In addition to supporting ceremonial occasions, RAN Band Melbourne also performs at many public events throughout Melbourne and Victoria, including school concerts, community music festivals, local commemorative services and large sporting events.

In short, RAN Band Melbourne is an extremely versatile group of talented musicians who are proud to serve the nation in the finest traditions of the Royal Australian Navy Band.

RAN Band Queensland

The Royal Australian Navy Band Queensland under the direction of Bandmaster Chief Petty Officer Andrew Stapleton, aims to promote and enhance Navy's image to the people of Queensland through performances at public events and ceremonial occasions.

The Band provides entertainment from a variety of ensembles including their Stage Band, Rock/Pop Group and Jazz Ensemble. Their repertoire ranges from timeless jazz standards through to hits of the 70s and 80s, as well as the current Top 40 hits.

RAN Band Tasmania

The Royal Australian Navy Band Tasmania is based in historic Anglesea Barracks in Hobart. The Bandmaster, Chief Petty Officer Mark Ham, leads a small and enthusiastic group of Naval Reserve musicians. The musicians of the RAN Band Tasmania have full time occupations as scientists, public servants, teachers and students to name just a few.

The Band’s capabilities include a rock band, various jazz combinations and a drum and bugle corps for ceremonial occasions. The Band provides professional musical support to Navy at a variety of functions across the state. Regular major performances include the Australian Wooden Boats Festival and the Royal Hobart Regatta in the south, and AGFEST and the Tasmanian round of the V8 Supercars in the north. The Band’s high energy rock group has developed a reputation throughout the State for its exciting performances.

RAN Band South Australia

The South Australian detachment of the Royal Australian Navy Band consists of 27 Naval Reserve Musicians under the direction of Chief Petty Officer Musician Kara Williams, and is based at Keswick Barracks in Adelaide. The Reserve Musicians represent a variety of occupations including full time students, secondary school teachers, arts administrators, a bus driver, a landscape architect, a corrections officer, a retail manager, and a chef, as well as including several full time professional musicians.

The detachment provides a highly visible Navy presence in a state with otherwise low naval representation, and supports a wide variety of commitments and organisations requiring many varied styles of music. The detachment is versatile, being able to provide a traditional parade band for ceremonial occasions, a 20 piece stage band, a 12 piece rock group, and smaller ensembles including a jazz group, saxophone ensemble, clarinet group and brass ensemble.

Recently the South Australian detachment has participated in Adelaide’s ANZAC Day, Coral Sea and Korean War 60th anniversary ceremonies; performed a chamber music concert for Sea Sunday at a heritage church in Wallaroo, supported Rotary fundraising, the Jetty to Surf swim classic and the Clipsal 500 V8 Supercars race. The Band also participates in community engagement programs at the Adelaide Royal Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and provides a bugler for most of the ceremonial occasions in Adelaide.

RAN Band Western Australia

Royal Australian Navy Band Western Australia under the direction of Chief Petty Officer Natalea Erskine primarily performs as a small Ceremonial Ensemble and high energy Show Band with a Rock Group element. It also maintains a popular Jazz Ensemble. The Band travels throughout Western Australia, having recently performed at both Defence and community events in Geraldton, Augusta and Albany. The Band also assists the RAN Bands in other states for major events such as the 2013 International Fleet Review in Sydney.

RAN Band Western Australia consists of 22 Naval Reserve Musicians drawn from all walks of life; including, Police Officers, nurses, engineers, teachers and firemen, to name just a few. The Band prides itself on providing a friendly and entertaining performance, with repertoire ranging from the Andrew Sisters and Glenn Miller, to Michael Bublé, Abba and Robbie Williams – something to appeal to all ages.
